Journalists killed in Gaza: names reported by Al Jazeera
Summary: Multiple credible trackers now report that well over two hundred journalists and media workers have been killed in Gaza since Oct 7, 2023. Tallies vary by source and timing: Al Jazeera’s rolling list lists at least ~270+ as of late August 2025; RSF says “more than 200”; several mainstream reports cite the 240–250 range.
This page aggregates names via linked primary lists and explains why totals differ. It will be updated as sources revise figures.
Current totals (why you’ll see different numbers)
Al Jazeera
Maintains a continuously updated name roll and profiles; latest reports put the toll at at least ~270+ Palestinian journalists and media workers. The article also documents recent mass-casualty incidents (e.g., Nasser Hospital).
Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ)
Hosts a live database (exportable) on journalist killings since 1992, including a dedicated Israel–Gaza war tab; totals update as cases are verified.
Reporters Without Borders (RSF)
States that more than 200 journalists have been killed by Israeli forces since Oct 2023; also flags cases where journalists were killed because of their work.
Ranges occur because each group uses different criteria (who counts as media worker, confirmation threshold, inclusion of “unconfirmed” or “indirect” deaths), and because numbers rise with new incidents and identifications.
Recent major incident
On Aug 25, 2025, strikes at Nasser Hospital killed 20 people, including multiple journalists. International outlets and the UN condemned the attack; coverage identified the journalists killed and noted a “double-tap” pattern.
Names (primary source lists)
Rather than publish a static list that quickly goes out of date, we link to the live, maintained rolls below and highlight a recent subset for context.

Recent names highlighted (Aug 2025)
- Mohammad Salama (Al Jazeera) — killed in the Aug 25 Nasser Hospital strike.

If you need a spreadsheet for local analysis, use CPJ’s export and the Al Jazeera roll in tandem; avoid mixing methods without labels to prevent double-counting.
Method & caveats
Who is counted?
Some lists include all media workers (camera operators, fixers, stringers), others only credentialed journalists. Totals also differ on whether deaths are confirmed as directly tied to work or occur in broader circumstances during hostilities.
Attribution language
We use wording from each source (e.g., “killed by Israeli forces,” “killed in Israeli strike,” or “killed during hostilities”) and link back for readers to evaluate evidence and context.
Why your number (≈236+) may differ
Because counts are moving and methods vary, earlier snapshots widely circulated (≈230–240+) remain online; newer updates push the figure higher (240–270+). We surface multiple reputable tallies and date-stamp them.
Accountability & investigations
- Press advocates have asked for independent inquiries into specific incidents, including strikes that killed multiple journalists at once.
- Coverage of the Aug 25 hospital attack spurred UN and international calls for accountability.
